Apparently Obama Needs Prayer

While this woman may believe that Obama needs prayer, I think she needs an education.  OOOOOh don't vote for the Muslim with atheist roots. Yeah education better become a very big priority in the USA, as clearly there are far too many idiots running around. I certainly hope that she has not had any children because that kind of stupidity does not need to be passed on to another generation.

When I watch these videos and people say, "Muslim" with so much fear I am saddened for them. I have friends and family of all different spiritual and religious backgrounds. In fact, one of those is Muslim. What would these people do if they met my friend, your friend, brother, sister, Mother, Aunt, colleague, etc.

There are many ways in spirituality and religion and people are allowed to choose whatever one they want to follow in their life.

What gets me is that she did not realize how racist she was being. Being Muslim is no reason from disqualifying anyone from serving in public office.
I also wonder if people really studied the history of Islam and read the Qu'ran if their feelings would remain the same? There is so much beauty in middle eastern culture.

My favorite part was when she decided she was able to decide on what is or is not christian enough.

Thank you, Renee, for the comment above. I have organized many workshops on politics, society and culture in the Middle East and larger Islamic regions of the world, and the one thing I stress to our wonderful educators is that, whatever else you may gain from the session, PLEASE PLEASE be aware and learn about and teach to the diversity of these regions and (let alone think critically about them, the legacy of colonialism, our government's involvement in these regions, and media bias)! They are NOT a monolith. It is NOT all about conflict, terrorism and oppression (although I make sure not to defend the indefensible and engage them in ways on how to teach these hard issues without falling into stereotypes and privileged and racist tropes). While many of them get it, I am afraid that often the teachers who should be in the workshops are not the ones who attend.

Having said that, will Canada make it easier for us to declare asylum if people like the woman in the video have their way on election day?

Unfortunately it won't matter if public schools here in the states are so vigorously reformed that they become fine palaces of scholarly pursuits, because there will still be plenty of incorrigibly ignorant bigots-- such as this woman-- who will isolate their children in a cultish, bloated-with-hatred, perverse form of home-schooling. Sad, because I attended college with people who had been home-schooled and they turned out well adjusted and sane, and I know that there are many home-school children out there who are NOT being inundated with bigoted propaganda and fundamentalist superstitions.

What's most troubling is not just her bigotry, she just seems so smug as though she's got the right answer and everyone else is wrong. It's just in the way she asserted that everyone ought to vote the way she does because her voting is "faith-based".

I agree with this so much, but why attempt to gain knowledge when you can always rely on ignorance and fear to bolster your sense of superiority?

I'm tired of "Muslim" being treated like a slur.

Yes, her response about Muslims is completely racist- but there's also the bigotry about atheism, or even people raised by atheists. The assumption is that "no god" = "no morals" and that is not the case. I am an agnostic and my partner is atheist. When we have children, they will not be taught any faith, but still raised with a moral gauge of right and wrong based on ideas about justice and equality. Most of all, they will be taught to respect the beliefs of others. And if one day they choose a religion, that's ok too.

The idea that everyone has to have the same faith in order to do right or lead is ridiculous. But also the idea that you can judge a person on their "background" is equally stupid. My mom is a Catholic and I am agnostic. It makes just as much sense that Obama's parents could be a Muslim and an atheist, but he chose to become a Christian.

The American media sure has been successful associating Muslims with terrorism, haven't they? If only they could use those powers of manipulation for good.
