A Tale Of A Scary Black Man: Ashley Todd Admits Mutilation Story False

Once again, thanks Natalia for posting this at Global Comment. I will get everyone started and then follow the link to finish.

On October 23, it was reported that a McCain volunteer was robbed and assaulted by a black man. She claimed that after robbing her, her assailant noticed a McCain/Palin bumper sticker on her car, chased her down, and carved a backwards B into her face. At one point, she even alleged a sexual assault.

The police spent many hours investigating this case attempting to prove the veracity of her claims, only to have her admit today that she made the entire story up.

McCain, for his part, his been quick to point out that she is an unpaid volunteer, and as such has no deep involvement with the campaign. Yet had McCain not unleashed such clearly racist rhetoric throughout this election cycle, would a woman like Todd have believed that her behaviour was appropriate?

Though I firmly believe McCain’s dirty campaign tactics did indeed play a factor here, what should also be recognized is the history that white women have of blaming innocent black men of assaults. From Susan Smith, to Carroll Donham, white women have been either complicit in false accusations against black men, or else have been used as props in justifying murdering black men.

As a very young white girl (13 or 14), I, too, was shocked and appalled by the photos of young Emmitt Till, and they were seared in my brain forever. I guess that is why as soon as I as I heard about Charles Stuart and Susan Smith and now Ashley Todd, I immediately called bullshit on their claims. Viewing the photos of Till was formative in my developing an anti-racist consciousness and conscience. What happened to him should be taught to all young people, and yes, they should be shown the photos.

Yup this story does remind me of Emmit Till's story too, I remember the first time I read about it and saw the pictures I couldn't even look at the pictures it was too heart breaking.

I do this assignment with one of my classes every semester where I have them visualize the "typical crime" and "typical offender" and then tell me what they look like. Guess what? If they are being honest, then of course it is a young, black man. Then we explore media constructions of offenders and how this influences their perceptions. I await the day when I do this assignment and the answer changes....

My first thought was the similarity in the accusation to the accusation that started the Tulsa Race Riot. And I can't help but think that some factions of the Republican Party would not be at all sad to see that riot repeated if it meant keeping Obama out of the White House.

And now the media has the nerve to say we should feel 'sorry' for her because she is 'mentally ill' WTF?!! THEY are the ones who are mental if they think for ONE second I'm going to let this b--ch off the hook ill my ass!! She's a lowlife little liar who they should put in prison for a day with some of those 'big, bad, black' males and see if the claim is true then.
