I have bitten my ABW (angry black woman) tongue as long as I can. I am thrilled to see that many people are out supporting Obama. Let's just face facts, he is the lesser of two evils, but he is not the messiah from on high. That said, I feel that I must once again point this out, voting for Obama does not mean that I should take you at your word that you're a devoted anti-racist. Yes it is nice that you can put aside your white privilege to consider being lead by a black man for four years, but this does not mean that you will not daily profit from the systemic racist imbalance in the system.
I am tired of hearing white people go on about the positive racial vision that Obama has given them, without thinking of the substantive changes that need to be made. Lets be really clear, after Obama gets elected blacks will still be over represented in the prison population, education will still be segregated by class and colour, and black women will still be facing higher rates of violence.
Some white people are so myopic when it comes to anti-racism that they cannot see that this issue involves more than black and white. Not only will the black and white divide not be solved, the issues that other bodies bodies of colour live with that have not even been addressed by this campaign, will still be in existence. Does anyone remember either Obama or Mccain addressing the issues of Indigenous Peoples? How about the issues of Asian Americans? Other than denying that he is himself a Muslim how much time has been spent decrying islamofascism for what it is?
So white people I am begging you, please stop using voting for Obama as some sort of anti-racist credential that you can pull out of your back pocket. White privilege is something that is not going to be dismantled with a single vote; furthermore continually reminding us that you voted for, or intend to vote for Obama is nothing more than cookie seeking.
If you want to impress me, or any POC for that matter, you will make a concerted effort to try and negotiate your privilege in such a way that you are not daily benefiting from it. You will do your best to remember that though you daily benefit from the legacy of slavery, you also owe an unpaid debt to Indigenous Peoples, Pacific Islanders, Asians, in fact every single body of colour that lives within the borders of the red, white and blue.
You will then need to turn outward and examine the ways in which your current lifestyle continues to impoverish bodies of colour globally. Yes believe it or not white hegemony is a global phenomenon. Of course this is not news to the poor living in Calcutta or the starving in Haiti. They know all to well about the policies instituted by white run western governments that have destroyed their economies, and threatened their ecosystems.
The overvaluation of whiteness is not going to be solved by electing the chosen one on Nov 4. I know that it will be tempting to pat each other on the back and sing a verse of Kumbaya or hey even a little Michael Row The Boat Ashore, but I promise you that people of colour take a far more realistic approach to this issue than this. We remember the joy of emancipation which was quickly followed by Jim Crow rules. We remember the promise of the New Deal which offered more jobs, programs, and incentives, for white people, and yes we remember the great society. How did all of these promises turn out? They have ended with more blacks in prison than ever before, bad educations, poor living conditions, violence, drugs etc and etc. So as you take the time to celebrate being progressive enough to vote for a black man, and you look around wondering why blacks are still looking at you with distrust; it is because you have broken nearly every single social contract that you have proposed which would honour our common humanity.
So break your glasses into the fireplace in celebration but please don't expect me to be overly joyful. Trust is earned, not given and you have a long way to achieve the trust of people of colour. In closing I would suggest if you really want that brotherhood how about you extend an olive branch for a change instead of asking blacks to turn the other cheek. One can only turn the other cheek so many times before cringing in anticipation of a slap becomes normalized.

John McWhorter, UC Berkeley linguist, has an interesting take on why he, as an African American, would like to see 8 years of Obama.
McWhorter is always an interesting read, I highly recommend you read what he has to say about an Obama Presidency.
John McWhorter is a conservative jackass (although I enjoy reading him - he is a great writer, no matter how much I disagree with him). But will check that out, Anonymous #1. A link would have been helpful.
As a middle-aged white woman, I am voting for Obama tomorrow (mostly to watch the Republican Party implode), but totally agree with Renee's assessment of him here.
I noticed throughout his campaign how POC were deliberately and glaringly left out of so much of the adverts and at the convention - maybe smart campaign tactics, in their view, but he morally lost the high ground. And don't even get me started about the abominable treatment of American Arabs and Muslims in this campaign. (And please, I don't want to hear one more person say he "had" to remain silent or distance himself from our Muslim brothers and sisters in America, and he will be different once elected. This is just plain insulting on so many levels).
I cringe when some of his supporters or pundits opine how this is going to usher in a post-racial period in these awesome United States.
In fact, I think structural racism (and all the other isms) will remain entrenched, as Obama will be loath to rock the boat too much with a second term on his mind. And the pressures will just be too great, both domestically and globally, to chart a real change of course. One man cannot, no matter how well intentioned (and since he has tacked to the right on a lot of issues, I have serious doubts about his intentions), dismantle the systemic rot of our domestic and foreign policies. And I still don't understand how anyone would want to inherit the clusterfuck that is our country come inauguration day, without a massive mandate or plans for real, substantive social, political and economic change, which I don't see happening.
An Obama presidency does not necessarily or automatically translate into a brighter future for POC or white people who vote for him, anymore than women prime ministers from Ghandi to Meir to Thatcher to Bhutto resulted in greater gains for women's rights, peace and social justice in their countries.
But I am still voting for him, and hoping that a majority does, too, which then holds his administration to the fire on his promises and much more. After 8 catastrophic years of Cheyney-Bush, this dream is as much privilege as I am going to allow myself in this election.
Finally, I am reeling from the comments in the last few posts. They give this "Anonymous" a bad name!
Good post.
White privilege, class privilege, and Western privilege are indeed powerful, especially in combination, and tend to put blinders on us all. I think this combination is why so many of my fellow white women are able to deny the continued existence of sexism, never mind racism.
Problem is, whenever I think about these issues, I realize that I'm lazy and spoiled and don't really want that to change. I think, "What do I have to do to be an anti-racist? Only buy clothes and food made in the US by white people? Start my own eco-village to make that reasonable?" Of course, there are many good reasons to buy local. It reduces greenhouse gas emissions caused by shipping food, as well as giving third world neo-slaves a break. My favorite eggs are local, but then, the corn used to feed them probably isn't. And what about when local produce isn't in season? Do you make a storage freezer so you don't have to buy Third World in the winter? And how is a poor person supposed to do any of this? Granted, they probably consume a good deal less of these slave-made goods...
I guess this is why slavery lasted as long as it did: complacency on the part of those of us who are privileged. If I'd lived a hundred and fifty years ago, I would have been asking, "What, am I only supposed to buy cotton grown and picked by indentured servants? Do indentured servants even still exist? Or am I only supposed to use sheep's wool from local sheep to make clothes?"
Ah,
Thank you! This was TEARING me up inside. To witness such a great change and know that it will not lead to a revolution is killing me a little. My favorite are people (usually white hipsters) who balk when they say "Of course you're for Obama right?" and I answer "yeah, he's the lesser of two evils." Priceless.
It must be fun being racist against white people.
A troll complaining about racism against white people, after that other thread full of trolls complaining about sexism against men, makes me want to break the frickin' computer screen!
It's pointing out continued injustice, and it's necessary if this continued injustice is going to be fixed. If people didn't speak out about prejudice and oppression because of fear of making generalizations about their oppressors, as I'd said elsewhere, we'd still be in the 19th century! And as it is, we're not far enough out of it, especially for men and women of color!
And I say this as a white person.
Good response space! If anyone brings up racism against whites well, hey whiteys deserve it for the past they didn't commit. I love looking into the eyes of white kids who had no control of being white or who their parents were, and saying all the nasty things they didn't commit (or didn't even exist when they went on!)
@Anon yeah POC have no right to be angry when crimes like this are routinely committed against us. I hope you choke on your privilege.
Renee, how many white people would drive their car into a black woman or even say something that bad is okay? You sure now how to pick up isolated incidents and sensationalize them.
Also, what do you mean I have no right to be angry? Racism against whites isn't something to be angry over just because the person is WHITE? Sounds like racism to me!
@Anon now you are becoming hysterical. Yeah like whites really have something to be afraid of when it comes to poc. Shame on you for not acknowledging your privilege. Those little white children that you are whining about are going to have to grow up and acknowledge their unearned privilege. Racism is systemic and it is maintained by WHITE PEOPLE.
You and your ridiculous white panic defense can just shut the fuck up. I have run out of tolerance for ridiculousness today. One more denial and you get the delete button. I will not enable any of your bullshit on my space. ENOUGH.
Anon: you don't have to be in the KKK or own slaves to be a racist, and you sure as hell don't have to do those things to benefit from racism working in your favor.
Not only do we benefit from the past - we wouldn't be here if our forebears hadn't raped, plundered, and pillaged - we benefit from crimes committed in the present. The clothes on our back and the food on our plates are the result of the slave or near-enough-to-slave labor of brown and yellow people in other parts of the world. The houses and jobs and educations we're able to get are that easy for us to get because they have long been denied to, and are still denied to, darker-skinned Americans. We are not suspected of crimes because black and brown people are.
You and I may not, as individuals, do anything to actively promote this system, but we leach off of it complacently. We didn't kill the calf, but we're eating its meat. We are not innocent. It's up to us to face the facts and decide what we stand for and what we don't. It IS our problem. Never mind that our ancestors, or more specifically, our ancestors' government leaders, created it.
I guess you missed the part about giving each other the benefit of the doubt.
@Nutmeg
As I said in my post, how many cheeks do you think that POC have to turn. You want trust, then earn it.
When I speak up about GBOTQI issues or disability I don't expect people to trust me. I expect to earn their trust, by proving through deed that I believe in equality. SO you will just have to excuse the hell out of me if after 300 years of inequality if I am not quick to hand you an olive branch.
You're right space- the US was founded on taking advantage of others, and it still does. That's something that most Americans seem to want to blissfully ignore, and it's wrong. So we do agree on something.
"voting for Obama does not mean that I should take you at your word that you're a devoted anti-racist"
Agree. I hope this changes, but it's disappointing that his current plans for his administration include very few WOC, albeit a good number of MOC. (Same with white women and men). Although not voting for him, I think it's overdue for us to have a president of color. I hope I am wrong about whether the discussion on race his candidacy and likely presidency will start will equally cover WOC.
Let me tell you how white privilege works, anonymous:
My great-grandfather was employed through almost the entire Great Depression because employers and employment programs favored white people. Because of HIS PRIVILEGE, he paid for my Grandfather's college.
My Grandfather went to a factory and started working. His year of college (impressive in 1948) got him promoted to management, something that was FORBIDDEN to black people.
He rose quickly in the company, and then he paid for my mother's college. She went all four years.
My mother uses her high-paying job to pay for MY college and MY graduate school.
And I have the PRIVILEGE of private education at the very highest level because of my WHITE PRIVILEGE, because of four generations of white privilege.
Acknowledging that ugly truth and finding ways to undo the crimes of the past is what ALL white people need to do.
And I acknowledge this without my special acknowledgement cookie, without arguing about merit, and without whining about how victimized I am at my $35,000 a year college.
So what if I have it better? There's always someone who has it worse. Blacks are American too, and you KNOW how America uses the rest of the world. Yes, complain about wage gaps but contribute to children having to work in sweatshops by buying all this stuff made in China.
Anon isn't going to get it no matter how often you explain it...for the sane among us we should just ignore that particular one *shrug*
But I just want to throw in that I agree, people who hail Obama like he's going to tear down all the walls of racism in this country are almost as bad as the people who think he's going to enslave every white person.
@T.R Xands exactly!! I could not have put that any better myself and may have to borrow it for future reference. The thing is, they don't see the difference because they are so wrapped up in the idea that they are being progressive.
Great post, love it!
Great post, Renee.
I am wondering if all the "Obama worshippers" who act as if voting for him will put us in a post-racist society have given any thought to voting for Cynthia McKinney -- a black woman whose platform truly stands for change and who has taken on issues of indigenous peoples, institutional racism, the prison industrial complex, etc. And, who, as you probably know, proudly calls herself a WOMANIST.
She is not the lesser of two evils, but a candidate with a progressive vision based on social justice and equity for ALL peoples be they gay, disabled, imprisoned, etc. Hence, she is given short shrift by the media as she represents a THREAT to all the things those holding the power hold dear -- and crucially, to white male zionist neo-con power in particular.
As for the "anonymous" who claims "white racism"-- well, if you take the etymological meaning of the word it is impossible to be racist against whites (same as it is impossible to be sexist against men) -- both words refer to who has the power -- you cannot be 'racist' against the group in power -- prejudice yes, but racist no. Anonymous, read a great little book called Racism Without Racists. It has your name all over it.
Anon:
Yes, the social injustices we as a dominant society commit in China, Iraq, etc. may be worse than our present-day domestic injustices, but this does not mean that domestic injustice is something to be tolerated "for your own good and the good of the world" in the same way that a parent would insist that a child eat her nutritious but bland-tasting dinner "because there are starving people in Africa."
The difference here is that social injustice is never a nutritious but bland dinner. It is all of the same nature, even though it is not the same degree, and it is all poisonous, unwholesome, unlike the spoiled Western child's bland food.
Think about it: the same kinds of things have been said to justify social injustices of all kinds, from yesterday's slavery to today's slavery to the "small beans" like blacks having less access to good education and women having decreasing access to birth control. "We give them enough already. What more could they want?" "It's for their own good and the good of Civilization(tm)!" "[insert oppressed group] are naturally better suited to [insert unappreciated labor]. [As long as they don't get any good money or recognition for it.]" "This is the way it's always been. It's a dog-eat-dog world." "They could pull themselves up by their bootstraps if they wanted to. They're just lazy and whiny."
All social injustices are of the same essential nature, and all should be fought, no matter how small. It's not any given crime that's the problem, so much as the system that makes it so easy to commit these kinds of crimes and make excuses like those above to justify it.
As a male with only lightly tanned skin, I feel at a disadvantage entering this fray, but I'll give it a shot.
Statement 1: White people are not inherently evil, the same way Hispanics are not inherently evil, nor are Blacks inherently evil.
Statement 2: Obama is not the Chosen One, but he is a lot better choice than McCain.
Statement 3: Until this system gets worked out, third-party candidates have almost no chance in hell, regardless of how great they would be in office. That, and
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YbEEyTIVKMI
Which leads into...
Statement 3: Conspiracy theories are just that. Until they in fact become legitimate theories, after actual research, etc.
I would consider myself...balanced, at least in a logical way, and therefore when confronted with racism, of any variety, I naturally reject it, as it lacks any logic. The same way that I reject any "privilege" bestowed on myself or anyone else simply because of statistics. You can look at this two ways, one being that whites have all of the power that, collectively, seek to maintain it by subjugating everyone else, and that this translates into every facet of their lives, or you can see it as there being an oppression propagated and perpetuated by the mere acknowledgment of any perceived superiority by anyone, white or black. If a white person refuses to believe that they are better simply because they are white, are they punishable because of the random chance that they were white? Not logically. The same way that the fact that someone is Black does not make them inferior to any other person on this planet. It is a perception that makes what is so.
Before I get attacked, I am not saying that all of this can be solved by The Power Of Positive Thinking because it's much deeper than that. This issue is not as simple as one being the oppressed and the other being the oppressor. Thinking it makes it so.
Civilisation goes back around ten thousand years. Over that time races have ebbed and flowed in place and power. However wealth has always been bound to power, both individually and collectively. So Obama is novel in terms of race and power in the context of the US, but I also see it as the social system removing an obstacle to the tendency of wealth and power to come together.
"Let's just face facts, he is the lesser of two evils, but he is not the messiah from on high."
This implies that he is evil. While i don't think he is the messiah I don't think he is evil either. I think he will do the best he can. It is possible to disagree with you and not be evil
~Tim
@Tim...what you have never heard of the phrase lesser of two evils? Literalism in every sense is ridiculous. Have you never said anything ironic or sarcastic in your life? Why do I waste my time on those that are determined to be obtuse?
I don't really have any issue with the substance of your post. What I take issue with is that you are a bossy, condescending know-it-all. No one likes being lectured or talked down to. "One can only turn the other cheek so many times before cringing in anticipation of a slap becomes normalized." cuts both ways, lady.
@Renee
As surprising as this may seem to you I have actually heard the phrase. I just happen to not think it is applicable in this case. You constantly say on this blog that words matter. When Chris Rock talks about Bitches, Hoes, Niggers etc... it matters because those are hurtful words. I am asking you to do what you ask of others. Be conscious of your chocie of words.
~Tim
@Tim there is a difference between using words like bitch and ho' and using a colloquial phrase that is not 'othering'. In fact to even compare the two reduces the harm that is caused by such clearly anti-woman language.
@SOCO privilege hurt much?
*shrugs with bland indifference*
-Eh.
It's funny that whenever we read something we don't like or disagree with, the fastest way to dismiss it is to attack the writer with personal insults. If Renee were white and male, I doubt she would be called bossy, condescending or know-it-all. You obviously don't read this blog regularly. If you did you would see that while encouraging others to check their privileges, she also acknowledges her own and asks to be called out on them when necessary. Which is much more than I can say for some of the commenters on this particular post.
And no one can make you feel "talked down to" unless you let them.
I was struggling to express my unease about this very phenomenon in comments over at bfp's. But yes! That's exactly what it is! Folks think think this is a 'Get Out of Racism Free' card. Not to mention a 'Get Out of Political Involvement Free' card... for the next four years.
@A
You misunderstand me again. No the Roma are not considered white and they are highly discriminated against. What I am saying, is that if someone is ROMA and they can pass as white, they will receive white privilege by default.
So if Julie lives a life wherein she is not easily identified as ROMA then she exists with white privilege irregardless of her actual racial identity. Since Julie has said that she is white I take her at her word that she is able to pass because she identifies as such.
Fantastic post again Renee I believe you nailed it. Very valid points. I have also been telling people not to believe that just because Obama has been elected that racial harmony all off a sudden resides in america or even the world.
The underlying issues in america will not all off a sudden disappear because of this election result. Obama definately has his niche and thats middle class america that says a lot about what his policies will focus on.
As a 20-something suburban white woman, I must say I completely agree. Not that my opinion matters a whole lot, but it really bothers me, too, when people start talking like this is the end of racism. I can appreciate the history we've taken part in, but I'm not dumb enough to think that one man can change the state of institutionalized racism in America just by being elected President.
Yes, agreed - and I'm definitely guilty, I think, of over-simplifying the issue at times. I am really glad that a lot of people did not fall for the racist rhetoric employed by the McCain campaign, and that a lot of white folks apparently did not fall into the attitudes of entitlement that made some white voters think voting for McCain was a neutral, non-race-based vote, whereas a vote for Obama was "because he was black." (This is an argument that I've been hearing/trying to push back against a lot lately.) That makes me think we've made some important progress in the national conversation. But I think a lot of white liberals patted themselves on the back for their votes in a way that was really self-serving and gross, not to mention reductive (again, a matter of reducing a candidate to his race, rather than basing support on an understanding of his positions). So, yes: thanks for reminding us that casting one vote does not = political engagement, and casting one vote for a man of color does not = anti-racist commitment.
Never mind all that. I thought we were all promised a new puppy!
