Black Friendly When We Need You

You know between the MRA infestation and the blame it on the blacks thing in reference to Prop 8, I have done some  thinking.  What these two incidents have done is confirm something that I have actually believed for quite some time;  blacks are used for the sake of convenience.

When other so-called justice programs needs us, they remind us of the ways in which we are marginalized and attempt to point out that their exclusion is the same.  You know what I'm talking about, the "it's just like Rosa Parks line."  This often makes me want to ask, really are you sure?  It seems that white people have a history of knowing what blacks go thorough on a daily basis when it is convenient for them to admit the ways in which they discriminate against POC.  When they want something from us, like a vote on a bill, organizing help, or even a gopher to make coffee they suddenly are so understanding of what blacks are dealing with.

The rest of the time we get told about how equal the world is;  yes the wonderful post racial world that we have been informed that we are all living in.  With the election of Obama we have even been flatly told that we have no excuses left for being at the bottom of the race and class hierarchy.   White people have been decent enough to put aside their racial hatred and therefore blacks should just buck up and deal with the high level of incarceration, bad schools, inequity in employment, etc and etc.,  It's socially unacceptable to say nigger today, as that is the mark of a bigot; however the other ways in which blacks are disenfranchised are socially deemed  a figment of our collective imaginations.

It seems it does not matter what the social movement  is, as long as it is represented by white people, POC are ignored until needed.  If you look at the advertising campaigns, or organizing patterns  for gay rights, fat phobia, animal rights, and  feminism, all have  a tendency to ignore POC.   Our specific interests within the movements are ignored in order to present a white image to the world.  Somehow the idea that whites are facing discrimination is supposed to make the world stand up and take notice, yet the idea that blacks may be dealing with multiple areas of stigmatizations at the same time is unimportant.

Los Angeles resident A. Ronald says he and his boyfriend, who are both black, were carrying NO ON PROP 8 signs and still subjected to racial abuse.

Three older men accosted my friend and shouted, “Black people did this, I hope you people are happy!” A young lesbian couple with mohawks and Obama buttons joined the shouting and said there were “very disappointed with black people” and “how could we” after the Obama victory. This was stupid for them to single us out because we were carrying those blue NO ON PROP 8 signs! I pointed that out and the one of the older men said it didn’t matter because “most black people hated gays” and he was “wrong” to think we had compassion. That was the most insulting thing I had ever heard. I guess he never thought we were gay.

We are not to expected to get upset when feminists, or the GLBT community displays racism because of course white women and white homosexuals are uniquely oppressed.  It is their needs that the world should pay attention to because white people weren't born to suffer.  It's no accident that the Rosa Parks line always comes out of the mouth of a white person.  What could possibly be worse in the world than being treated like a nigger? What the hell good is white privilege if you are treated like a person of colour and that is the message these so-called liberal social justice movements send to the world.

Geoffrey, a student at UCLA, joined the massive protest outside the Temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Westwood. Geoffrey was called the n-word at least twice.

It was like being at a klan rally except the klansmen were wearing Abercrombie polos and Birkenstocks. YOU NIGGER, one man shouted at men. If your people want to call me a FAGGOT, I will call you a nigger. Someone else said same thing to me on the next block near the temple…me and my friend were walking, he is also gay but Korean, and a young WeHo clone said after last night the niggers better not come to West Hollywood if they knew what was BEST for them.

As I am watching the backlash from the GLBT community regarding PROP 8, I am filled with so much anger and sadness.  Where is the angst for the white voters who supported PROP 8?  The GLBT community spent no time in black churches, community centres or neighbourhoods and yet they expected to be supported.  You cannot call upon us for convenience sake, and then shove us back into the closet (yes intentional choice of words) when we are no longer needed.

A gay black man or woman irregardless of race is still gay and  some white members have turned this into a hostile movement for them.  Where is the sense of community in this?  What these organizers fail to realize is that they have precious little connection with POC to begin with, and if they begin with the racist taunts they will alienate the few supporters that they already have.  This is a time when they need to be reaching out to POC to make a bridge that they never attempted to build in the first place, and yet descending into racial politics is the route that has been chosen. This is a myopic policy that will only serve to push gay rights even further back.

Social justice movements need coalitions across lines to be successful in any way.  When we look back at the civil rights movement of the 60's what is notable is that whites and blacks protested together. The Jewish community was a huge part of getting blacks the rights we so desperately needed and deserved.

The lesson to take from this is that by creating a broader base it creates the issues as a human issue rather than an issue  a small minority of the population. Showing humanity will cause others to react in kind, and until the GLBT community realizes that it takes an army of concerned citizens, and not a single flag bearer to make change, they will continue to have marriage ceremonies that have no legal basis.

Only through recognizing the common humanity of others can we ever hope to live in a true and just society, and until we can recognize the human rights of the person standing next to us we have no hope of achieving any kind of peaceful  and loving social cohesion.

Great post. Especially this:

It seems that white people have a history of knowing what blacks go thorough on a daily basis when it is convenient for them to admit the ways in which they discriminate against POC. When they want something from us, like a vote on a bill, organizing help, or even a gopher to make coffee they suddenly are so understanding of what blacks are dealing with.

I've been feeling like this a lot lately. I've been feeling uncomfortable with a lot of the backhanded racism I've been noticing lately, especially among people I know. They know damn well what my forebears have gone through but it only comes out when they need to make a point about something (usually against me) or when they want to show "solidarity". Sometimes, just whatever...

We're looking for the easiest thing to blame and the next day "70% of blacks vote for Prop 8" we hear on the news!

WTF!?! We say.

And instead of puzzling over this, looking into how well we reached that community... blame blame blame...

Watching it happen has turned my depression over the results to a) rage at the campaign for being so unbelievably stupid and dismissive of ethnic minority communities and b) anger at the anti-8 community for taking out their grief on an easy scapegoat instead of figuring out what went wrong.

Racism can't be over because even it had been, on November 4 and 5, it began anew those same days...which would mean, that it never disappeared. Hmmm.

Dang, you're right, white people want to need us, when they want to further their cause...and when we "don't", then they revert back to their white privilege racism.

I am so sad.

Taking PoC for granted when we want something, and then calling them names and attacking them when they don't do what we want them to know what that sounds like?

Yep, my people (whites) have not made much progress in their attitudes over the last 140 years.

harrietsdaughter said...

Thank you, Renee, as always for saying it like it is.
I keep going from joy to sadness at the events this week. I'm tired of oppression olympics. I'm tired of trying to figure out which community I can truly be a part of. I'm tired of figuring out where my safe spaces are. I'm just plain tired.

Fannie said...

I am ashamed that people within the LGBT community, a community I am a part of, are saying these things. Please don't think that all gay people think like they do.

What gets me is that I guarantee the predominately white "marriage defense" movement is going to keep track of these racist incidents and use it to further divide the black community and the LGBT community by implying that all gay people are white and racist.

Looks like whites are showing their true colours again. Sadly they don't even seem to realize that people of other races are gay too. Even up in Toronto where I live, when I take the train to work as soon as you hit the stations in the downtown core all the gay ads are targeted to gay white men and women, and I say to myself well and that some ish I work along side gay people of all races. BUt the ads always showcase white people.

Sloth Womyn said...

Renee, I have been discussing this with my Goddess group and I was wondering if I could repost this blog on there. I think this is really important for the women (who are all white) in my online group to see this.

Awesome post. Blacks are used when convenient all of the time. That was very awful that couple had to suffer those slurs and ignorant comments. I am happy to say that the Feminist organization that I am involved in here focuses a lot of POC or Women of color. I'll also say that the majority of participators are not WOC.

Per our conversation at Alas, Renee, I had no idea this was going on this level. That's disgusting and horrifying.

I am just glad I wasn't the only getting angry at the vitriol.

What I want to know is, how can we allies help queer people of color? That's all I'm about, now. I'm done with white people for a minute. They can't keep having their savior complex flip into "darkies help us!"

Fannie said...

The vitriol coming from SOME white gay people is inexcusable. But Lexicality and Ebony Intuition said:

"I'm done with white people for a minute. "

"Looks like whites are showing their true colours again."

I think you need to be very specific and clarify whether you think all whites have these "true colours" that you speak of or that all white people are responsible for this vitriol. The way it reads to me is that both of you are assuming that all white gay people, namely the vocal idiots who are venting on blogs, speak for all white gays. That generalization sounds an awful lot like the generalizations some white gay people are making by blaming Prop 8's passage on all black people.

Can we at least acknowledge that not all white gay people are racist, and not all of us are blaming black people for Prop 8's passage?

Proud menopausal straight white woman here.

Fannie, yes, you are right, many are speaking out against the racist backlash by some in the GLBTQI community, and yes, in a perfect world, people shouldn't respond in turn, in their justified anger and outrage at this backlash, with more essentializing.

But sorry, it is the behavior of the racists that started this, which is why it was so toxic for them to engage in it, because it will only result in a circular firing squad, while the religious fundies and straights who funded and led this campaign laugh all the way to the bank.

Also, behind some of the anger that is causing you anguish is the long history of the LBTQI movement, just like the feminist movment (don't even get me started on their behavior), in ignoring AT BEST and being contemptuous and racist at worst towards POC and WOC in their movements, which is something a lot of us resent the hell out of.

Also, another factor I think that gets left out of a lot of the critical analysis of these movements is CLASS, which intersects with race in the composition of the hierarchies and memberships of these two movements, and that classism has also served to undermine the goals of equality and dignity for all of us. The economic interests of the two movements has too often led them to ignore or dismiss poor and working class people either as members or as allies, forget about them being part of the leadership.

So, there is a lot of work to be done, but the ultimate responsibility is with the white, upper middle class leadership of these two movements to do the hard work of acknowledging their class and race privileges, educating their rank-and-file, and using their resources to do the outreach and alliance-building necessary to ensure there are no more successful gay and woman-hating ballot initiatives.

I think you hit that nail on the head. I have been HORRIFIED by some of the racist language I have been hearing on this issue from some of my fellow LBGQTs. It's especially amazing to hear the black community criticized (for something which is not their fault) as a whole with language like "well, they know what it's like to be oppressed, so they should understand." Er...yeah. 'cause nothing says you are searching for common ground like making idiotic blanket statements about a huge and very diverse group.

Fannie said...

I realize that the racists started this, but just because one group started it, it doesn't make it okay for another group to engage in similar behavior. When all gay white people are generalized as racist or not worth even bothering with anymore, that's not going to help us come together.

The white Christian homo-bigots certainly are laughing all the way to the bank right now, I agree with you there.

I have to be honest: after arguing about this for four days straight (haha), I'm so angry and hurt that I want to say "I'm over white folks." I'm not, though, because the woman I married two months ago is about as white as they come, and I love her dearly.

Still--I decided against going to the rally in Sacramento tonight, because I was afraid of being a target of hatred because of the color of my skin. Even more, any interest I had in working with predominantly white GLBT organizations has pretty much been squashed.

Solidarity is a two-way street. So far, I've seen a lot of assumptions that the black community "owes" the gay community--and that the passage of Prop 8 means that it's okay to write all black folks off as homophobic. That's short-sighted and stupid in addition to everything else, but I've gotten tired of trying to explain that to people who don't want to listen.

Fannie said...

I know exactly what you're talking about when you speak of those assumptions regarding how some gay people think the black community owes us something. I'm fully aware that many (most?) LGBT organizations are imbued with white privilege (and oftentimes male privilege) and thus fail to speak to and connect with people of color. From my experience, I think some of these organizations have a genuine desire in reaching out, but don't know how to infiltrate (so to speak) black communities that can be homophobic.

And frankly, it's embarrassing to see a rich white gay guy, for instance, compare himself to Rosa Parks. I will stand in solidarity with you and help counter the racist speech that some in the LGBT community are making.

As an aside, I attended the Dump Dobson rally tonight in Chicago and I can tell you that the self-identified "black allies against bigotry" were warmly received by the predominately white LGBT crowd. I hope that if you decide to attend rallies in the future white LGBT people make you feel safe and welcome.

Renee said...

I know exactly how you feel.I am also partnered with a white male and it can be so frustrating to see such bigotry in this world. It is when I look at him, I remember what it should be like between the races.
Even though the GLBTQI community is guilty of the erasure of bodies of color don't forget that the media is fanning the flames of hatred at every opportunity. Those of us that are allies need to keep speaking out for justice or nothing will ever change.

Rebecca Walker said...

I believe the issue of the black church cannot be overstated. And I hope that more African-Americans of all backgrounds can find a way to affirm their connection to the divine, or that which transcends ordinary reality, without dismissing or degrading others. An understanding of why Christianity came to be the religion of choice for black people is a good way to start. We didn't come to these shores Christian.

I also think it's important to maintain mental stability at all of these points of intersection. There is no monolithic black or white or GLBTI community, and we should not proceed as if there are. Animosity and anger are important but also dangerous emotions. These directed at a group can create a potentially disastrous result. Careful, considered response will more likely yield more positive, non-incendiary results. Working with people who support the right of all beings to be free, and cultivating understanding and compassion for those who do not is a good way to stay sane. It's certainly worked for Obama. Speaking to the best part of each of us, the part that wants to act with openness and integrity.

Wow. I feel out of the loop.

I've been aware from various sources that this was making the rounds, but the only places I'm hearing it is on PoC blogs. I'm pretty sure this is more due to the limited number of blogs I read and basically non-existent contact with the MSM.

Unfortunately it's not hard for me to believe. If you are living in the south, you have to be in complete denial to say racial bias isn't a huge factor in our politics and our personal interactions. I don't doubt this is the case in other places, with very limited amounts of cover up and tweaks because of locale. Unfortunately I've seen it in the Queer community just as deeply as in straight environments.

Every reaction I have to this situation keeps coming back to 'Invisible Man'. I might be misunderstanding, but its that same kind of blindness to the humanity of others that is at the root of the problems. :/

Blackamazon said...

polerin said...

The thing I forgot to say in between
"Unfortunately I've seen it in the Queer community just as deeply as in straight environments."

- and -

"Every reaction I have to this situation keeps coming back to 'Invisible Man'."

is this:

"I've also experienced homophobia from PoC as much as I have from white people. I like none of these things, and I try to stand up against all of them.

I don't blame any group for prop 8 passing besides the religious right. More specifically I don't blame California's black population. 10% of an electorate does not a law make. Nor do I presume that that community will or should support me, though I would hope for it. It just hurts to have the validity of my relationship rejected by 14% more of a community than even the next highest group [1]."

Sorry for the split post. Basically I'm trying to say, "Damn this sucks for lots of reasons, but can we figure out how to get out of the mess rather then yell at each other about it?"

Renee said...

See I think we need to hash this out. Sweeping it under the rug will not change a thing. There is a lot of pain and anger and I know how painful it is because I feel it to, but change comes from airing our dirty laundry and then moving forward.

polerin said...

I didn't intend that it be swept under the rug, though I realize what I said basically meant that. The things that have been said are hurtful, reactionary, WRONG, and are demonstrative of the underlying racial tensions and bias of the culture in which the people exist. I've no right to tell you how to react to it, and I'm sorry for that.

If issues like these aren't dealt with, it will (and apparently has) come up over and over again, and you don't move forwards. There is no denying that. That you have mixed emotions when considering the Oshiro arrest and things like it is a testimony to the fact that the GLBT community, or at the least members of it, have been done some pretty serious damage.

I just feel caught between my deep loss because of all the prop's that passed and the anger that causes, and my absolute horror at hearing how members of a community that I belong to have acted. This is not theory, this is not discussion, it is people being hurt - Everywhere, every which way, and I have no real power to stop it or help.

The worst part is that I'm caught in the same bind that you are about Oshiro. I'm upset about yet another round of blaming it on PoC. As I said before 10% of a population does not a law make. This anger is blunted by the fact that if the CNN poles are right, that the people I normally would jump to defend voted 70/30 to take my rights away. Not just said or did violent things, but to literally strip away legal protections. It's hard to speak up for someone that just slapped you in the face, even if it IS the right thing to do.

I don't include you or any other person that has fought for us over the years in the hurt and pain that I feel. It's not your fault, and I thank you for your caring and effort. That doesn't mean I don't feel the pain.

Danyell said...

What has happened here is that the media has said "You want to blame someone? Blame the Blacks!" and put forth a bunch of scary-sounding statistics that don't really add up and a lot of people bought it. Mostly because no one wants to be the "lowest" group. So one oppressed group seeks to oppress someone else, so they don't feel like untouchables. It's a sick cycle, brought on by our classist, elitist society.

The gay community is enraged and looking for someone to blame. It is in no way justified to turn it into a racial attack, though. I just think they saw the country taking two steps forward for POC, while it takes two steps back for queer folk and in that moment of injustice, lost their minds.

It makes me really sad.

Lisa Harney said...

One of the many awful things I've heard said or quoted over this, was a cissexual white gay man who was waxing poetical about how black people should've all voted no because "they know what it's like to be oppressed."

That made me so angry, because apparently the LGBT community doesn't have to hold itself to this standard - it's okay for the white LGBT community to oppress other minorities through white privilege, or for cis LGB people to oppress trans people through cis privilege, but the moment they feel like someone else threw them under a bus (and this is for a truly exaggerated and ridiculous definition of "thrown under a bus") it's time to bust out the pitchforks and torches.

I am so angry about this right now. It's not black people who passed proposition 8, it's homophobia and people who listened to the homophobia.
