Spark of Wisdom: Why Does Gay Sexuality Automatically Mean Adult

This is a guest post from Sparky, of Spark in Darkness.  Many of you are  familiar with him from Livejournal, as well as from his insightful and often hilarious commentary here. Each Tuesday, Womanist Musings will be featuring a post from Sparky.

Disclaimer: Absolutely no-one is allowed to make any judgments about my musical tastes from this post. Including Sunday Shaming by certain Canadians with horrible horrible plastic shoes :P

So I was pottering around looking for some musical accompaniment to the randomness  that has been plaguing me of late and decided to go for Lady Gaga's Teeth - because it always makes the day a little more fun. And I'm sure the guy in the chair could be a lot of fun, yes yes I am.

And a message came up, I had to log in (which necessitated remembering my password, an event in and of itself) to prove my age because the video had been flagged for adult content.

And I have a "hmmm" moment. Because, yes, it is sexy - oh so very sexy - but none of the other music I'd been listening to had been flagged.

Katy Perry feat Snoob Dog: California Gurls

Near complete female nudity, strongly sexually suggestive, whipped cream shooting breast guns (I can't believe I just typed that)...

Not Flagged.
Shakira: She-wolf

Woman locked in a cage in flesh coloured body suit, writhing in an extremely sexualised manner

Outfit that exposes one arse cheek

Awful choreography (sorry, had to go there)

Not Flagged.

Britney Spears Toxic

Woman completely naked side on

Man in underware and naked in a steamy shower

Lots of sexualised contact and dancing between man and woman

Sexualised violence.

Not Flagged

As may be guessed, I suspect there is a double standard here, especially in what we consider porn or suitable for children.

Completely naked women? Plastered absolutely everywhere - in fact, I think you'd have to have your eyes put out NOT to see sexually objectified women at least a dozen times a day. Completely suitable for children

Women dancing sexually/writhing around near naked? Also perfectly suitable for minors. Not adult content.

Shitless, underwear clad or carefully fuzzed naked men so long as there's a woman around? Not nearly so common (alas) since men are not close to as objectified as women - but when it appears, suitable for minors. Not adult content.

Men and women dancing, kissing, groping, grinding, straddling, lap dancing and all but doing it in front of the camera? Not adult content.

2 shirtless men in a scene with a heavy homoerotic subtext though with relatively little sexual contact?  Oh my GODS! WILL SOMEONE PLEASE THINK OF THE CHILDREN!!!!!

This is an utter pet peeve of mine. It annoys me that our sexuality is considered so much more threatening than heterosexual sexuality. It annoys me that we're seen as something we should protect children from (oh boy does that one annoy me). It annoys me that people had utter screaming meemies over Adam Lambert kissing a male band member - a simple kiss! It irritates me that if I go out in public holding hands with Beloved, I'm made to feel like we're doing something inappropriate. It annoys me greatly that if I should kiss him so many would regard us as if we'd stripped down and had a lap dance in the town square.

Our sexuality is no more obscene, no more inappropriate and no more in need of censoring than heteronormative sexuality. We don't need sweeping under the rug. We don't need hiding behind closed doors and we sure as hell don't need to be kept away from the children.
