I am not a fan of Dan Savage, but who can deny that his treatment of Rick Santorum had been in a word, brilliant.  It began when he created a new definition of Santorum.

When you google Santorum, Dan's page is the third response.  He has since gone on to create a site called Spreading Santorum.  You would think that a politician would be used to political dissent, but apparently, it's all become too much and has hurt his wittle fee fees.  Awww poor Santorum, is being bullied and how dare a marginalized person, not put up with being actively reduced and denied rights.  All is not right with the world when a privilege man can get attacked for affirming his privilege.  My heart just bleeds.

With pouting lip and typical privileged outrage, Santorum took his complaints to goole saying:
“I suspect if something was up there like that about Joe Biden, they’d get rid of it,” Santorum said. “If you're a responsible business, you don't let things like that happen in your business that have an impact on the country.”

He continued: “To have a business allow that type of filth to be purveyed through their website or through their system is something that they say they can't handle but I suspect that's not true.”(source)
I wonder then if he would agree that since Obama is president, that all of the racist shit that you can find directed at him on the internet should be taken down?  People like Santorum don't realize that free speech means that people can actively oppose you.  The same free speech that allows Santorum to spread his vile message, is the same free speech that protects Dan's response.  There really is no reason for google to take down Dan's website, and unlike many republican sites, he does not insight violence. Furthermore, I believe that Santorum has an inflated value of self importance.  Writing negative things about him does not weaken the U.S. in anyway, and in facts maintains the values that the U.S. was founded on.

Google responded saying:
"Google’s search results are a reflection of the content and information that is available on the web. Users who want content removed from the Internet should contact the webmaster of the page directly," the spokesperson said. "Once the webmaster takes the page down from the web, it will be removed from Google’s search results through our usual crawling process."
Yep, I guess that means that Ricky boy is screwed.   I doubt at this point that even if he begged on his hands and knees that Dan would take down his site and why should he?  Santorum is not suddenly going to change and stop attacking the GLBT community, because it is part of his personal belief system, and his base voters just love having a group to actively oppress, to make themselves feel important and righteous, even as it supports their privileges.

Dan Savage is renowned for the many things that he gets wrong, but even a broken clock is right twice a day.  When it comes to Santorum, his site is without doubt brilliant.  It bothers Santorum because as a man born with so many privileges, he expects to be able to control the message, but now that we have the internet, groups that have historically been silenced, have the ability to effectively counter that which targets them directly.  Large corporations have long been aware that even one dissenting piece can quickly grow into a true nightmare for them.  If you doubt that just ask KFC about its racist ads that appeared in Australia, or Southwest and the response to kicking Kevin Smith off the plane, or Amazon when they decided to delist certain feminist and GLBT books.  This is why many republicans actively act bloggers, they cannot control the message.

Not only did Savage respond in a brilliant fashion to Santorum, he has potentially inspired millions to believe that they too can be heard. Wow, I never thought that I would write that sentence about Dan Savage.  If you doubt that you too can make a difference, all you need to do is visit the website that Dan created for Santorum.  Blogging can be a powerful political act of dissent and anytime a group of people in power bigots try to stop the speech of a marginalized person, that is a clue that we all need to pay attention. Every site, no matter how small makes a difference.
