Thanks for publicizing my famously mean-spirited congressman, Steve King. His defamatory attacks on Obama have gone far beyond his "dancing in the streets" comment. At an August 21 meeting, King questioned Obama's Christian faith and patriotism, slandering his dead mother, his dead father, his stepfather, even his uncle.

King's opponent for the November election is Rob Hubler, a really decent guy. http://www.hublercongress.com

Considering only a small percentage of planters actually owned slaves, the only way to convince poor people to fight for slavery (which was against their class interest) was to inflate the value of whiteness.

Another strategy also employed today is this: Make economic mobility appear more common than it really is. That is, fan the flames of hope in the most dishonest way, reinforcing an ethos of protecting the "rights" of the rich by crafting a mythos that anyone can become rich, if only they'll play by the rules, work really hard, etc.

Thus poor whites are doubly unlikely to side with their own class interests. On the one hand, they are handed a small measure of white privilege, and on the other hand they are fed the lie that they too could one day become rich enough to own slaves (or, today, be subject to the dreaded death tax, or capital gains taxes, etc.)
