A bunch of ignorant people uncomfortable around a black person for lack of experience with black outside of a superior to inferior relationship. So they attempt to lighten their discomfort by jokes that aren't funny. It's sad, but until they are exposed to more blacks and stop being so afraid they will never learn. The worse part is some of them probably think they were just "funnin'" with her and have no idea why she would get upset.
